Cat houses
The core value of repurposing is to use a residual material in a way that compliments the material’s properties to the best of it’s abilities. By using our residual stream of recycled PET-felt scraps to create a series of cat houses. Our studio has been working with WasteBase’s waste streams for some time now, developing a broad variety of products like lamps, designer chess-boards and lifestyle products. After experimenting with the material over a considerable period, it just clicked for cat-lover Ties Westerhuis; PET-felt is the ideal material to make a hideaway for our feline friends.
Cats naturally are solitary animals that seek out quiet places to retreat and relax. In the wild, cats hide in small, enclosed spaces to avoid predators and remain unseen by prey. Domestic cats never lost this instinct, hence why they enjoy napping in corners and under couches. The cat house mimics this natural environment, making it instinctively appealing to them.
A cat house made out of a material like PET-felt provides a sheltered environment, enhancing their sense of security and lowering stress. The material is naturally insulating, trapping warmth in and keeping sound out. Not only does this make the hiding spot extra appealing during the colder days, but the material’s sound-dampening properties create relaxing environment for your pet.
Cats simply love having a space that’s entirely their own; a little getaway like this serves as their personal “territory,” which is essential for their well-being.
